HOW TO: Using your new SASSA card correctly

Do not share your PIN with anyone, even if you think you can trust them.

How to use your new SASSA card at a shop till: 

  • Hand your card to the cashier at the till.
  • Enter your PIN when the cashier asks you to do so, and press the green button on the pin machine.

Remember – you do not have to withdraw your entire grant at once.

Also – if you withdraw at a selected store (Boxer, Shoprite, Checkers, Pick n Pay), your withdrawals each month are free.

How to use your new SASSA card at an ATM:

The ATM has a special slot for your card, usually with a flashing green light around it.

  1. Insert your card into the slot.
  2. Type in your PIN code and press the green button on the ATM.
  3. Select the CURRENT ACCOUNT option –  this is very important!
  4. Choose the amount you wish to withdraw.
  5. Take your card and your money.

Remember – banks charge a fee when you use their ATMs, and this will be deducted from the money on your card.

Oops – the ATM swallowed my card!

What to do when an ATM swallows your card:

Go to the inquiries counter at the bank with your ID, and relay your problem to the teller.

When will the ATM swallow your card? 

  • If you enter the wrong PIN three times.
  • If you select the wrong account type three times – remember to select CURRENT ACCOUNT.

Oops – I forgot my card PIN!

  • Your PIN can be reset at your local SASSA office or SA Post Office branch
  • Bring your SASSA card along with your ID to reset your PIN.

Keep your money safe

  • A PIN protects your account and keeps your money safe.
  • Choose a PIN you can remember, but not that anyone can guess easily (i.e. the year you were born).
  • Do not write the PIN down.
  • Do not share your PIN with anyone, even if you think you can trust them.
  • If you lose your SASSA card, immediately report it at your nearest SASSA office or SA Post Office branch.
