Limited funding has had a definite effect on road maintenance.
The Newcastle Advertiser contacted the municipality recently, with regard to the continued deterioration of roads in and around town.
This has made for a quite literal bumpy ride.

Problem areas reported by residents include Kirkland Street near the Informal Trade Centre, Hathorn Street towards Fernwood, Marconi Drive and sections of Bird Street.
Tree roots have been blamed for the latter problem.
Marconi Drive has made headlines numerous times in recent years, with residents reporting extensive damage to vehicles as a result of potholing and road damage.
Motorists are now seeking answers from authorities.
In an official response this month, the municipality said issues referred to in email correspondence by the Advertiser, were covered in a ‘pavement management system report’.
This document is to be approved by the Technical Services portfolio.
“With the limited budget, the department will focus on the key areas that need urgent attention.”
According to the municipality, the Kirkland Street crossing would be rehabilitated once a required pre-mix was available.

It would also re-assess Hathorn and Bird Streets.
“Any necessary maintenance work will be carried out by our maintenance team.”
Additional questions on roads highlighted for repair projects by Newcastle Municipality, were not answered at the time of going to print.
