Sarel Cilliers: rugby and cricket excellence
It was a really long haul by bus from Durban to Cape Town and after 20 hours the girls were only too glad to be taken to the beach to stretch their legs.
Sarel rugby girls Participate in Cape Town Tournament
Alwande Ndlela and Nontobeko Mathupa were selected for the KZN u/19 and u/16 girls’ rugby teams to take part in the Youth Training Centre Games in Cape Town over the long weekend.
It was a really long haul by bus from Durban to Cape Town and after 20 hours the girls were only too glad to be taken to the beach to stretch their legs, stick their toes into the water and loosen up a bit. Alwande was quick to point out how icy the water was and that nobody in their right minds would swim there. She was also surprised that the sun only rose at 8am each day!
Each team played 2 games and KZN had to face the top team in the country in their first match! Although they lost, they played hard and managed to finish 5th overall. It was a fantastic experience for Alwande and Nontobeko and the memories will be with them for a long time!
Cricket
The Sarel Cilliers 1st XI Cricket team took on Ladysmith Secondary, in what proved to be an intriguing match, tested by the conditions. Taking the opposition all out for 75 runs, the boys went in knowing it’s not over until the last delivery. Proven to be a very true statement, the batting line-up was tested against a very good bowling attack but managed to pull away with a win, with two wickets.
Congratulations to Wessel du Plooy who bowled 4 overs, gave away 5 runs and took 4 wickets. The man of the match was Juandré Lundie who batted excellently and steadied the ship when required. Good luck for the next fixtures coming up.
