MUST READ: Uncovered manholes pose a hazard in CBD

The businessman claimed he was eventually informed by a municipal employee that the uncovered hole was in fact not the responsibility of the municipality.

An open manhole on Ayliff Street has turned into both a makeshift refuse bin, and poses a hazard to passers-by and workers.

According to a businessman operating in the area, the manhole has been uncovered since 2014.

“Ever since I started my business, I noticed the open manhole and reported it to the municipality then.”

His concerns seemed to fall on deaf ears, as it still has not been covered almost four years later.

“We have laid numerous complaints, but no one seems to attend to it.”

The businessman claimed he was eventually informed by a municipal employee that the uncovered hole was in fact not the responsibility of the municipality.

This was despite one of his workers falling into the hole and being injured. His concerns were forwarded to Newcastle Municipality through its Communications Unit, but no response was received at the time of going to print.

The Newcastle Advertiser has since done its own survey of the area. Reporters found at least four manholes and drains were missing their covers and castings, a fact which gives the business community no comfort.

“Must someone die first before the necessary measures are taken? If the municipality can’t take care of the minor issues in town, how are we supposed to trust their integrity to upgrade our failing infrastructure?”
