Newcastle Optometrist joins hands with CANSA to make a difference

With the outcome unsettled, Faizal Mohammed decided both teams were worthy winners.

During this year’s CANSA Relay For Life (RFL), many Newcastillians joined hands in the worldwide fight against cancer.

As part of the 2018 RFL, Faizal Mohammed Optometrist hosted a school ‘tug of war challenge’, with the aim of both getting the youth involved in the important cause of eliminating cancer, and giving back to the community and those who battle challenges each day.

The winning team could nominate a school of its choice to receive a R2 000 stationery voucher.

On the day of the event, over 20 teams participated and when the dust had settled, teams Walking Warriors and Printsave met in the thrilling tug of war final, during which the rope broke.

With the outcome unsettled, Faizal Mohammed decided both teams were worthy winners.

Walking Warriors nominated Lennoxton Primary School to receive the first R2 000 voucher, while the Printsave team nominated Suryaville Primary School as its beneficiary.

When the vouchers were handed over in September, teachers and staff were visibly emotional.

Explaining the decision to nominate Suryaville Primary, Printsave’s Duran Soobramoney said: “As an ex-learner of Suryaville Primary, I immediately knew I wanted to give back to the school that helped to shape me into the person I am today.”

For Walking Warriors, the project hit close to home and Sanjay Singh said these initiatives helped unite communities.

“Every little donation makes a big difference. Whether it is big or small, every contribution has the potential to inspire people to help and make a difference. Even school projects or donations can help to shed light on bigger issues in communities and that is the beauty of RFL and the work CANSA does.”

Faizal Mohammed Optometrist thanked every team and individual who contributed to its efforts during 2018 RFL.
