Ward councillor pleads with residents to leave suspected rapist alone

"I am pleading with you, no matter how angry you get, taking the law into your own hands is never an option,” Cllr Molefe said.

Things seem to have settled down in the Ntababomvu community after a meeting was held on Thursday with the ward councillor, Fukang Molefe, following a violent outburst where residents torched a home.

“We do not condone what happened last week when some members of the public set a home alight on allegations that the family there was housing a rapist.” These were the words that Councillor Fukang Molefe opened the community meeting with.

Cllr Molefe said that the violent outbreak had caused a great amount of grief on the family whose house was burned.

“I am deeply saddened by the fact that most of the people, who were part of that angry mob, are not here today. This is despite them having been the main people that requested this meeting in order to find a solution to this matter,” said the councillor.

“Most of us have only always read about things like this in newspapers or seen it on TV. I could have never imagined that such violence would occur within our community. I am pleading with you, no matter how angry you get, taking the law into your own hands is never an option,” Cllr Molefe said.

Sixteen members of the community were arrested and charged with arson in the area last week after they torched a home near Masondo’s cross on allegations that a man there had raped a six-year old.

The ward councillor said that they would let the law take its course.
