Extreme heat accompanied by ‘weird weather’ with reports of a tornado-like cloud formation

Northern KZN residents have been left sweltering over the past week with some relief finally in sight.

The extreme heat of the past week is set to continue until Saturday when, according to the weatherman, the temperature eases to 24 degrees from highs of 38 and 39 degrees.

Fritz Botes of the Fort Mistake area reported measuring 44 degrees on Wednesday.

He also videoed what he called ‘a strange cloud formation’ that headed towards his farm on Wednesday that appeared to take on the shape of a tornado. There are no reports of damage.

The heatwave has put farmers on the back foot with a hail storm of the previous week having damaged young mealies in the fields.

River levels have dropped markedly and the heat has been accompanied by crippling water outages in Endumeni as the Umzinyathi District Municipality battles with ageing infrastructure and pump problems from Tayside from where Endumeni’s water is extracted from the Buffalo River.

The level of the Buffalo River has dropped rapidly due to the lack of rain. Newcastle is also drawing water from the Buffalo River as that town has also been experiencing chronic water outages. Water has been released from the Chelmsford dam to help stabilise the level of the Buffalo.
