Official questioned over 2017 bomb threat

Mayor has also been questioned, police confirmed

Police have confirmed that the municipal official taken in for questioning this morning is a suspect in a bomb threat call  made against the municipality in February 2017.

The official, who was handcuffed and taken from the municipal building this morning by the Hawks, cannot be named as he yet to be formally charged.

The bomb threat was made last year shortly before the start of a Council meeting, scheduled for 3pm. Three motions had been tabled at the meeting which included, among other issues, a call by the ANC Councillors for the Mayor to be investigated for alleged corruption.

Police also said that the Mayor, Richard Mbatha, who yesterday tendered his resignation, was also questioned by the Hawks at around 10pm last night.

This follows the explosive release of the forensic COGTA report in to corruption at Endumeni Municipality.
