Free to go now as hyped up court atmosphere ends in a damp squib

It is not yet clear why the case was not enrolled despite rumours that former Mayor faces charges

A morning of speculation ended in a damp squib at the Dundee Magistrate’s Court after an expected appearance by former Mayor, Richard Mbatha, never materialised.

Members of the national media and the packed gallery were left puzzled when it was suddenly announced that the matter against him – apparently defeating the ends of justice – and his bodyguard was never put on the court roll.

Earlier, rumours were running rife that the former Mayor and at least two others – one a municipal official – were to appear today.
Earlier, Hawks spokesman, Captain Mhlongo, said a charge of defeating the ends of justice related to the Mayoral car accident in July was being investigated.

A municipal official was yesterday questioned by the Hawks over a bomb threat made at the municipality last February shortly before a Council meeting.

The gallery was packed with people and heavily armed police instructed the gallery to make sure they are seated. Shortly afterward another policemen announced that the case they were all waiting for had never been enrolled.

For now, it appears as if no one has been charged despite rumours to the contrary.

Members of the ANC Endumeni Council caucus said they were surpised by the outcome but hoped that the matter will still be investigated.

There was no sign of the ex- Mayor at the Court.
