Guard succumbs to gunshot wound

A Ford Focus, that apparently been hijacked, and a BMW were later found abandoned. A third car, also a BMW, is believed to have been used as a getaway car.

The guard who was shot in the head during Monday’s cash heist on the Dundee/Vryheid road died in hospital on Tuesday.

It was said he died in a hospital in Ladysmith. A farmer, Martin Dedekind, was shot and wounded when he attempted to stop the gang that blew up the G4s van near Scheepers Nek on the speed bump section near the ‘Tea Cup” restaurant.

Police said the scene resembled a battlefield with the bombed out G4s van, heaps of scorched notes and other wreckage blocking the road.

Gunmen took advantage of the speed bumps that slowed down the van and forced the driver to stop at gunpoint. The van was then bombed to gain access to the cash boxes. It is not clear as to the amount of money taken.
