Gutsy teen defies the odds
Her motivational message is that despite facing many hardships, she was never willing to let it determine her path in life.
Carrie Dubert’s (20) hard work and persistence, no matter the odds, has paid off.
This studious young woman was recently awarded a study bursary valued at R25 000 from Innovation Private College, allowing her to complete her studies in Early Childhood Development (ECD).
Campus Principal Don Nerahoo described Carrie as one of the campus’ most dedicated students, making the decision to cover her study costs an easy one to make.
Nerahoo revealed that Carrie, after completing high school in 2016, received a wonderful gift from an anonymous benefactor who offered to pay for her college tuition.
The sponsor paid for three years, enabling Carrie to graduate in her chosen field being a National Certificate Vocation in ECD.
But Carrie was not done with her studies yet. Much to her delight, Heart of an Angel Foundation stepped up and rewarded the ambitious youngster with a bursary to further her studies.
“Carrie has been one of our best students and therefore we felt she deserved this opportunity to further her studies. We wish her all the best going forward,” said Nerahoo.
Cathy Naudé revealed her foster daughter’s journey had not always been easy, but that moments like these made it all worthwhile.

“Carrie came to live with us about nine years ago after coming from a broken home. I run the RSA Feeding Project and Carrie always used to come and sit with me – we would just chat. I became so attached to her that I decided to apply to become her foster parent,” revealed Cathy.
She said that as a result of the stress at home, Carrie had faced numerous academic problems at school but after she joined their family, she began, with her foster mother’s help, working tirelessly to improve her results.
Things started to change for the better and within eight months she became head girl of Tugela High School and was presented with a certificate for excellent leadership skills.
“We were absolutely thrilled when we received the news. She has really worked very hard and I am so proud of the woman my daughter has become. Thank you to each and every lecturer who has put in the time and effort in helping her with her studies and for the bursary,” said an emotional Cathy.
At the graduation, an emotional Carrie stepped forward and thanked each person for helping her achieve her dreams and for always offering support when she needed it.
Her motivational message is that despite facing many hardships, she was never willing to let it determine her path in life.
“I feel so blessed right now and words cannot explain how grateful I am for the help I have received thus far in making my dreams come true. This really means the world to me. I not only want to thank the college for their help, but I want to thank the special woman who has raised me, Cathy, for her support. She has spent many nights studying with me and making sure I achieve greatness. I honestly feel like the luckiest girl in the world right now,” she concluded.
