5 getaway destinations close to Newcastle to visit this festive season
For those not going too far away this festive season, there is still plenty to do over this period.

During the festive season, many South Africans begin getting ready to host friends and family gatherings.
However, many do not always feel like doing the same old thing each year, and a holiday away from home is always fun.
However, even the shortest getaway can be costly.
A cheaper holiday option is opting for destinations closer to you, rather than far a way places which require thousands of Rands.
Here are some holiday destinations not too far away from Newcastle:
- Moreson Ranch and Lion Park:
Enjoy a fun-filled weekend full of excitement and the thrill of Mother Nature at this beautiful outdoor ranch, situated near Vrede.
Guests can enjoy a variety of activities such as a hiking trail, site-seeing and a massive indoor pool.
However, the ranche’s greatest tourist attraction is its lions and lion cubs, which sees dozens of people flock there on a weekly basis to spend their time playing with the cubs.
- Natal Spa Hot Springs and Leisure Resort:
This is situated on the road between Vryheid and Paulpietersburg on the Battlefields Route.
Set in the scenery of the Bivane River, Gooderson Natal Spa Hot Springs Resort offers an outdoor pool with water slides and two spa baths, as well as various other activities out and about in nature.
Activities available for guests include a sauna, a plunge pool, two steam rooms, a hydrobath and a fully equipped fitness centre. Other facilities include a supertube, volleyball and paintball obstacle course on site.
- Nambiti Private Game Lodge:
Nambiti Private Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal is situated on 22 000 acres near the town of Ladysmith and the renowned KZN battlefields.
This reserve boasts the attractions of the Big 5, as well as bird sightings.
- Ncandu Falls:
Ncandu Falls can be found in the Ncandu State Forest Nature Reserve, in a valley about 32km from Newcastle, near Normandien.
The waterfall is about 30m high and considered part of Ntshingwayo (Chelmsford) Dam, which is 40km away.
There are braai and picnic areas available.
- Ntshingwayo (Chelmsford) Dam:
Situated on the Ngagane River in Northern Natal, Chelmsford/Ntshingwayo is the third largest dam in KwaZulu-Natal.
Angling is a popular activity with good catches of carp and scalies reported regularly.
The reserve offers good game viewing opportunities and there are large herds of springbok, blesbok and red hartebeeste as well as one of the most viable populations of Oribi in the province.
Visitors are free to walk or cycle anywhere within the game park, as there are no dangerous animals.
