The Magic of Mary Poppins
The story of Mary Poppins spans generations over generations and has the power to step beyond the silver screen and into the hearts of many...

December. The time of year where families come together and celebrate lives shared. However, during this festive period I found myself alone on Boxing Day in an unfamiliar city.
Lost and not sure what to do, I needed to entertain myself. So I decided to go to the cinemas and perhaps find comfort in the collective solitude of any other lonesome moviegoers…
Mary Poppins has always been one of my all-time favourite movies – one I watch almost every year come December time (or any other time I feel nostalgic and pine for my childhood). So seeing that the new ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ has just come out, I was rather excited and thought that this is probably the best way to spend my evening.
Got to the movie-house very early, first one in line for popcorn and first one in the cinema. Here I thought that it would just be me and Mary, and what a night that would be! However, all the other patrons started jaunting in…
There was a quite bustle in the air, children parading in with not only their parents, but their grandparents as well. A full family affair.
An elderly lady well in her eighties slowly limped into the cinema assisted by her daughter as they carefully crept towards their seats. She sat next to a little girl which I can only assume is her granddaughter.
This grandmother would’ve been a little girl herself when the original Mary Poppins premiered in 1964. Yet here she is over half a century later enjoying the sequel with her kin – not letting her fragile body hinder such a momentous occasion for her family.
In the fullness of time, the movie began – and I was still alone in my row…
Five minutes into the movie, after the opening number, a trio of generations silently creeps into my row: a grandmother, her daughter, and her daughter. They gently sit down right next to me and get comfortable as Mary Poppins makes her grand entrance.
The sweet old lady next to me had a cup of tea, and the aromas of the Five Roses made me think of my own gran and how I was no longer alone. Throughout the movie, there were moments of laughs and giggles, tears and murmurs which were now all shared with my new found ‘family’. This is the magic of Mary Poppins.
The story of Mary Poppins spans generations over generations and has the power to step beyond the silver screen and into the hearts of many; creating a family, not only with those around you, but with the Banks family as well.
As lonely as I was walking into that movie, I walked out with a very happy and heavy heart.
