Local authorities closed off the road while paramedics began assessing the patients

The number of road fatalities during the festive season in the Ladysmith region was 53. There were 43 crashes.

On December 15, four people were killed and five others sustained injuries when their vehicle overturned on the N3 near the Bergville Toll Plaza along the N3 during the early hours.

Shortly after 1am, paramedics and KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Services arrived at the scene, where they found that the occupants had been thrown from the vehicle.

Sadly, four people, including a young child, had already succumbed to their injuries. There was nothing that paramedics could do for them and they were declared dead at the scene.

Five others were treated for various injuries. They were later transported to hospital for further care.

It is believed that the family were on their way from Johannesburg to the Eastern Cape when the incident occurred.

On Sunday, December 30, two people were killed and eight others injured following a head-on collision on the N3 highway at Van Reenen’s Pass. Paramedics, along with other services, arrived on the scene shortly after 4pm to find two wrecked light motor vehicles in the middle of the road. Motorists had stopped and had begun to render assistance to the patients.

Local authorities closed off the road while paramedics began assessing the patients.

A woman was found lying beside the one vehicle, while a man was found in the second vehicle.

Unfortunately, both had already succumbed to their numerous injuries. Nothing could be done for them and they were declared dead.

Eight other patients were attended to on the scene. Four were found in a critical condition, while four others had sustained moderate injuries.

Paramedics treated them and provided the critically injured with advanced life support interventions. Once treated, they were rushed to hospital.

Deepest condolences to the families of the deceased.
