Daughter honours late mother with aid foundation
We want children to be confident enough to go to school with pride. We want to give hope to children by dressing them first and then begin to nurture their talents.”

After the passing of her mother, Nondumiso Mhlungu made a decision to keep her legacy alive and started a foundation in her mother’s name.
Owing to her mother’s passion for charity and strong desire to help others, the Nomasonto Mhlungu Foundation was born.

Although the foundation is still in its infant stages, it has already made an impact on the community, dressing 15 learners from Hlabana Primary School in school clothing.
This is said to be just the beginning steps for the foundation.
Nondumiso’s mom was an educational specialist by profession and taught at many schools in Madadeni.
“My mom used to say it was difficult to teach a hungry child. Because of this, she started a feeding scheme at the school where she was teaching,” said Nondumiso.
She explained the aim of the foundation was to strengthen and enhance the life of children.
“We want children to be confident enough to go to school with pride. We want to give hope to children by dressing them first and then begin to nurture their talents.”
Nondumiso grew up in Madadeni and attended Siphosethu Creche and Preschool.
“Because both my parents were teachers, they could afford to send me to Newcastle Senior Primary School. I matriculated from Ferrum High School and later obtained two degrees, one from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and the other from the University of Witwatersrand.”
Although Nondumiso feels privileged to have the opportunity to attend schools in town, she still understands the hardships and challenges the children in the township experience.

“I can safely say I’ve had the experience of both worlds and I believe I am blessed so I can bless others.”
She believes the opportunities presented to her have played a direct role in her decision to start this foundation, in memory of her mother, and give hope to the less fortunate children.
Nondumiso, her siblings, father and cousins are directly involved in the operations of the foundation, and their long term goal is to target three schools in three years, where they conduct mentorship programmes as well as give aid to other schools where help is needed.
“My dream is to inspire and encourage at least one child who would then become the ambassador of change,” she concludes.
