Eco-Park fence has been nabbed by thieves
The concerns around the poor state of the park were communicated to the municipality.

The perimeter fence at Crawford Street Park has been stolen – again.
Following a tip from residents regarding the state of the park, the Newcastle Advertiser visited the facility last week to ascertain the extent of alleged problems.
It was then determined the fence had indeed been nabbed by thieves.
According to certain officials, they believed the fence could have been missing from as early as September 2018.
However, the exact date of when it was removed remains uncertain.
During the visit to Crawford Street Park, reporters also noted damaged play equipment, broken taps and swings which appear to have been removed.

The concerns around the poor state of the park were communicated to the municipality.
In an official response sent by Head of Communications Dr Dumisani Thabethe, it was stated the park’s boundary fencing had been stolen twice.
“Due to financial constraints we will be making submissions for new fencing in the 2019/2020 Budget. Upon receipt of capital funding, we will replace equipment and fencing accordingly.”
A couple visiting the Crawford Street Park from out of town said they usually stopped at the facility while on holiday.
They found the atmosphere at the park relaxing.
However, they had also noted some problems: “The park looks fine besides people having destroyed the swings and other equipment.”
The Crawford Street Park has made headlines a few times over the past couple of years, which ultimately prompted the municipality to hire security to protect the park equipment, yet it seems some residents are determined to destroy it all.

With months to wait before the new Budget process is finalised, it remains to be seen what more damage so-called ‘social ills’ can cause to the park.
