Here are some of the stories that were making headlines this week in January 1999

1. Premier slams Cosatu, Sadtu at election rally – KwaZulu-Natal Premier Dr Ben Ngubane attended the IFP’s election campaign where he accused Cosatu of limiting business and job creation and Sadtu for disrupting education.

2. Fire destroys family’s clothing and food – A woman’s home in Wembezi burnt to the ground, allegedly by an unattended candle.

3. Two new classrooms at primary school – Riverside School, on the outskirts of Estcourt, opened two new classrooms, thanks to the hard work by an organisation called Affirmative Action.

4. Never too old for gold – Estcourt Athletic Club’s Hein Rohde won three gold medals in the South West District Veteran Championships.
