Rock Monitor Lizard enters tyre factory in Ladysmith

Over the past few weeks, Fanie has removed numerous lizards like this one close to people’s homes

A spooked Rock Monitor Lizard entered the Sumitomo Rubber factory in Helpmekaar Road last week.

Local snake expert Fanie Cilliers was contacted to go and remove the creature.

Fanie explains that the lizard was outside and when it saw people, it must have gotten scared and run into the factory. Once inside, it took cover by hiding behind a DB board.

Fanie says it took him over an hour to remove the lizard due to the small space he had to work in. His hands were cut up by the reptile’s claws and also by the wall due to space constraints.

The lizard measured 1.3 metres and was a male.

“Curious workers gathered around to watch my struggle,” quipped Fanie.

Over the past few weeks, Fanie has removed numerous lizards like this one close to people’s homes.

This Rock Monitor Lizard was safely released.
