The easy-going Mr Mohanadasan considers himself ‘very lucky’ to have achieved this qualification.
Anaesthesia is a state of controlled, temporary loss of sensation or awareness that is induced for medical reasons.
As a youngster, Mr Mohanadasan attended Drakensview Primary School and matriculated at Estcourt High School in 2006, where he was also the Head Boy and top one of the top performing matric learners.

He went on to study a four-year-long course on anaesthesia … and from there, 12 years later; he has completed a degree in the field. As we all know there are various fields in medicine – so we asked why anaesthesia?

“Well, I was exposed to anaesthesia when I did my community service. It was probably the only discipline in medicine that interested me so much because of its mixture of medicine with maths and physics. It’s intricate and analytical. Anaesthetists are often referred to as ‘intra-operative physicians’…so there’s a lot of responsibility in terms of making a patient sleep and looking after them while an operation is going on. It always fascinated me and each patient is different, so you learn new things and always continuously develop,” explained Mr Mohanadasan.

He remains humble about being one of the youngest Anaesthesia Specialists in South Africa, and being humble is a trait that Estcourt and its people instilled in him.

“Estcourt may be a small town but the people there are homely. Humility is one of the biggest lessons I took with me. I can always take that with me wherever I go, it helps put you in place no matter where in the world you go to, it really helped teach me appreciation as well,” reminisced Mr Mohanadasan fondly.

He wished to inform locals that he is not and will not be the only success story to hail from Estcourt.

“I want you to know that you don’t not have to feel that because you are from a small town, you do not have the best teachers, it all comes down to hard work, perseverance and being humble,” he advised.

The 29-year-old is a testament that hard work and humility can get you a long way.

“The 12 years of studying has paid off, yes it’s good to be done and it’s a big relief but in the medical field you are constantly learning,” shared Mr Mohanadasan.

He is currently doing private work while awaiting a job opportunity at a public hospital in Pretoria.
