PREVIEW: Paulpietersburg singer wows judges on the ‘The Voice’
Emil Paul had the judges pumping their fists in the air in appreciation of his spectacular performance.

Paulpietersburg resident and former Vryheid High learner, Emil Paul (22), let rip with his rendition of ‘In my Blood’ by Shawn Mendes during Sunday night’s blind auditions on the ‘The Voice’, and had the judges pumping their fists in the air in appreciation of his spectacular performance.
Fokofpolisiekar frontman, Francois van Coke, grabbed Emil in an approving hug, soul diva, Lira, gave an impressed bow, saying, “You did well,” breathless gospel, country star, Riana Nel, commented, “Yassi! That was awesome,” and rapper, Ricky Rick, applauded enthusiastically.

A close up of Emil’s father, Dr Hugo Paul, a general practitioner who runs his practice in Paulpietersburg, showed him glowing with pride as his son took to the stage.
It’s hard to believe that this talented singer was once so shy to sing in front of an audience, that even the choristers standing right next to him could not hear his voice on the stage during his performances as part of Vryheid High’s choir.
Emil grew up an only child raised by his father, who was a single parent after Emil’s mother died when Emil was just 10-years old.
“Being an only child has its benefits. For instance, I got all the attention of three children. It wasn’t easy for my dad, especially in the beginning. He had to find his feet, but we have very strong family bonds with both sides of the family and that helped a lot. I basically grew up in a tightly knit German community with a close group of friends in a town where you can’t go anywhere without bumping into someone you know,” says Emil.

When asked about his decision to audition for ‘The Voice’, Emil admits that this is something he has always wanted to do. “It’s something you kind of have at the back of your mind to do someday, like bungee jumping, but you never really feel that you will ever actually do it, until you do,” he says.
