Young hero determined to save lives with his blood

"You are making an incredible difference by sacrificing a small amount of your time to donate a pint of blood that will not kill you, but is sure to save someone else’s life out there"

25-year-old Siphesihle Mtshali made his 15th blood donation at the Ladysmith Blood Donor Clinic on Monday morning (March 25).

Siphesihle’s friendly smile goes hand-in-hand with a great sense of humour as he donates his precious blood.

As an O-Positive donor, Siphesihle is passionate as he speaks about the good that can come from donating one’s blood in order to help those in need.

He started donating blood when he was 16 years old and still in high school. Due to his job and the travelling that goes with it, Siphesihle either donates blood in Ladysmith or Durban these days.

When asked why he donates, he says there is nothing nobler than having the chance to save lives through your selfless actions. He aims to be a more regular donor and become another ‘hero’, as all valued donors are called by the clinic staff.

“You are making an incredible difference by sacrificing a small amount of your time to donate a pint of blood that will not kill you, but is sure to save someone else’s life out there,” says Siphesihle.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is appealing to the community to please come forward and donate, as the Easter holidays are approaching. Many people will be travelling on the roads and blood is sure to be needed due to motor vehicle accidents.

Special tokens of appreciation will be handed out to donors.
