Is Newcastle CBD becoming a crime hotspot?
Capt. Ncube says many parts of the CBD are extremely busy, and advises residents to rather avoid these heavily congested sections of town if possible.

Newcastle SAPS has deployed more members to the CBD, in an attempt to curb crime in the area.
Following reports of a series of robberies, snatch-and-grabs and muggings around the Allen Street area – both successful and unsuccessful – residents are urged to be cautious.
So says Newcastle SAPS spokesman, Captain Jabulani Ncube.
Responding to three reported crimes on Allen Street in the past week, Cpt. Ncube says SAPS is bulking up its manpower in the CBD, especially around pay-days and pay-weekends.
“There is currently visible policing in these areas, but we do appeal to the community to be cautious.”
Capt. Ncube says many parts of the CBD are extremely busy, and advises residents to rather avoid these heavily congested sections of town if possible.
“People must have the SAPS number stored on their phones in case of an emergency, so you can get hold of the police quickly.”
Capt. Ncube’s advice to residents, to avoid becoming a crime statistic, is as follows:
Carry less cash when travelling in the CBD – cash is easier for a criminal to get away with, compared to bank cards which can be traced and cancelled.
Avoid walking with a cellphone or other device in your hand – using a cellphone can be a distraction, and can also mark you as a theft or mugging target. The same goes for wearing expensive jewellery in public.
Watch out for thieves and pickpockets – Ncube says there are cases where criminals slit open handbags and satchels with blades, to reach items that fall out or can be removed from the damaged bag.
When in a vehicle, be cautious at stop streets and traffic lights – Ncube says drivers and passengers may be targeted at intersections, and advises motorists to keep their windows rolled up.
Be aware of your surroundings – criminals want to take your possessions and will often use any means necessary. Staying alert could prevent you becoming a victim.
“Criminals are busy, possibly because we are heading to Easter.”
