NKZN poets bring the heat in ‘Blazing Furnace: poetry show
The atmosphere in the Vryheid Library hall was 'on fire' as the poets brought the heat sharing their views on social issues through rhyme.
POETS from all around Northern KwaZulu-Natal gathered at the Vryheid library hall to wow locals with their artistic play on words.
From rural Zululand, right through to Newcastle, poets who stand very confident in their work, came to Vryheid to be part of the ‘Esithandweni Somlilo’ poetry show.
Translated, the name of the show means ‘Blazing Furnace’ and the atmosphere in the hall was ‘on fire’ as the poets brought the heat sharing their views on social issues through rhyme.

The event was organised by friends, Lwazi ‘Qhawe’ Mavuso and Mthandeni ‘Usonkondlo Wezulu’ Mabizela.
The two have always been passionate about the art of poetry. Having snatched two awards at poetry events in Durban and Pietermaritzburg, they decided to see what they could do to keep this art alive.
“Our belief is that through uniting in such projects we can create a platform for young people to start making a small income, through which they will eventually thrive and take on larger crowds,” explained Qhawe, who said that although they had only sold very few tickets for this event, they are optimistic about what the future holds.

“The truth is we just need someone who will believe in our art and will endorse us financially. Once that happens, I know without a doubt that we will be able to grow the art of poetry within Zululand and show these poets that this is a talent worth nurturing,” he explained.
Vryheid can prepare for more poetry Sundays as these poets plan to return to Vryheid on May 25 to bring yet another day filled with creative lines, idioms and figures of speech that are sure to entertain.
