The engagement was facilitated by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).
The outcome of the meeting was that Imatu and the municipality agreed to establish a task team to consider various issues.
This task team is made up of senior management from the municipality and unions. The meeting was set for April 9 while the facilitation conducted by the CCMA was to resume on April 16.
The task team meeting scheduled for April 9 was rescheduled to April 12. On April 12, the meeting was adjourned due to incomplete information and was rescheduled to meet on April 16.
“On April 16, the municipality then advised that the documentation was not yet available and rescheduled the meeting to April 24.
“The employer requested the CCMA on April 12 to postpone the facilitation scheduled for April 16 on the basis that the task team meeting will resume on April 24,” explained Imatu’s Regional Manager Cathi Botes.
In November 2018 the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) also slammed the municipality after its announcement on the mass layoffs.
