#IMadeMyMark – ‘Be the change you want to see’
First time voters tell us why it is important to vote
Born frees Zamagumbi Gumbi, Teneel Naidoo and Mahdiyyah Adam have more than just grade 12 examinations on their mind.
In less than a week, South Africans go to the polls to vote in the 2019 General Elections. The three young women from Drakensberg Secondary School believe that it is an integral part in South Africa’s history and say that change and growth should be the results of this election.

Focusing on issues that affect mainly the youth, they say that they hope more young people will take to the polls this year, not only to make their mark but to also ensure that their voices are heard. For Zamagumbi, voting is essential.
“As young women, we need to have input, maybe the political party that wins will be one that caters for us so that we can flourish in a male-dominated world,” she said.
Teneel hopes that young voters make the right choices to secure a future.
“The truth is that voting will aggrandise the youth and not only define South Africa’s future but their role in it and until they vote, they won’t make any impact,” she said.
Mahdiyyah believes that if South Africans are seeking change, they need to ‘go out there and make it happen.’
She says that one of the advantages of living in South Africa is its diversity and how people accept each other.
The trio encourage all South Africans to be part of making a change by voting on May 8.
