Former principal killed in shooting

Former Principal, 63-year-old Buthanani Shange and his friend, 47-year-old businessman Martin Sithole were gunned down yesterday.

Newcastle SAPS has released the names of those killed in the Voortrekker Street shooting yesterday.

The incident took place at around 5pm.

In a media statement, Newcastle SAPS spokesman, Captain Jabulani Ncube said: “Former School Principal Buthanani Golden Shange (63) and his friend, businessman Martin Nkosenhle Sithole (47) were standing in front of Sithole shop when they were shot by unknown gunmen.”

It is believed Sithole was shot in the head, while Shange sustained bullet wounds to his chest and leg.

“Both Shange and Sithole were killed, while three bystanders were wounded. The wounded are in hospital receiving medical attention.”

SAPS is currently investigating two murder and three attempted murder cases.

“While the motive of the attack is not conclusive at this stage, it has been decided the task team investigating political killings take over this investigation,” says National SAPS Spokesperson Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo.

“We appeal to anyone who may have any information about this attack to contact our toll free Crime Stop number (086 00 10111). Callers may remain anonymous and all information will be treated with strictest confidence.”
