Learners aim to feed their peers

Anyone who wishes to assist the school in any way, is urged to email isibukosabasha@jenny.co.za or contact Nompumelelo on 034 271 9172.

Sponsorship of uniforms and food can change the lives of Isibukosabasha Primary School (Nquthu) learners.

For this reason, the school is requesting sponsorship from residents and businesses in the Umzinyathi District.

Isibukosabasha Primary recently entered the Youth Citizens Action Programme (Y-CAP), a youth development programme which empowers, skills and motivates new generations of active citizens.

The participants are judged according to their efforts.

As part of this process, five Grade 7 learners from the school have helped identify 26 peers, who are in need of school uniforms.

They were also tasked with identifying and providing solutions, for one problem their peers face.

  • Lusanda Ngcobo (13), the leader of the group and administration manager, has identified water problems at the school and in the area, which according to her, hinders the learning process.
  • Ntandoyenkosi Mlotshwa (13), has identified hunger and malnutrition, which may result in pupils losing concentration during class lessons.
  • Sandiswa Ngobese (12) did research on low self-esteem, which may be caused by not having proper school uniforms. She says this is where the community can help.
  • Andiswa Mabuya (12) saw a lack of discipline among her peers, which has resulted in bullying.
  • Ahlelelwe Kunene (13) identified the issue of absenteeism and coming late to school.

Lusanda adds: “When we did research on the poor academic records of pupils in our schools, using our School Administration and Management System (SAMS), we were able to identify all these problems faced by our peers. We are also working with the Department of Social Development, to help with counselling for those who may need it”.

The group of girls is also raising funds to help others.

Together, they have hosted cinema days and cake sales, with income generated to be utilised for purchasing of school uniforms and food for the hungry.

“We want to make sure our peers eat healthy food and are not starved after school hours, which is why we are appealing to the community at large to donate food as well.”

Nompumelelo Mlothswa, Deputy Principal of Isibukosabasha Primary, is one of two teachers supervising this year’s Y-CAP team.

She said, “As school teachers, we have to get involved and make sure our pupils get all the support and supervision they need. This is not the first time we have entered the Y-CAP competition; we entered in previous years and were able to win the district and provincial selections. In 2017, we were second in the provincials, and we have all the faith in our girls and hope the community at large will support them.”

Anyone who wishes to assist the school in any way, is urged to email isibukosabasha@jenny.co.za or contact Nompumelelo on 034 271 9172.
