New surgical procedure performed at workshop in Ladysmith
The surgery involves needle-puncture of the skin to get to kidney stones and remove them

A kidney workshop was held at Ladysmith Provincial Hospital recently by Dr M Alsharef.
Local doctors, the head of Department of Urology at the University of KZN and registrars from out of town were present at the workshop.
The reason was to introduce and talk about Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), which is a minimally-invasive procedure to remove kidney stones via a small puncture wound (up to about 1cm) through the skin.

This kind of surgery involves needle-puncture of the skin to get to the stones and remove them, rather than using the riskier “open” surgery, where tissue or inner organs are exposed.
Ladysmith is the second place in KZN where this procedure has been performed. So far, three patients have undergone this operation.
Guests who were invited to the workshop were awed by this new technology. A real-life procedure was carried out at the workshop.
