Bakkie damaged during protest outside police station

He later laid a charge of malicious damage to property, but does not hold out much hope anyone will be brought to book.

A motorist is fuming after his bakkie was kicked during the protest outside the Dundee Police Station.

The motorist, who preferred not to be named, said he had turned into Gladstone Street not realising that protesters – following the arson attack on a substation – had gathered outside the police station.

“A minute later, I found himself surrounded by the group. They kicked my bakkie and broke my rear view mirror. I am from Glencoe and did not know what was going on,” the motorist told the Courier. “Police officers monitoring the march saw it but did not intervene.”

He later laid a charge of malicious damage to property, but does not hold out much hope anyone will be brought to book. Police officials in turn said the driver had made no attempt to avoid the crowd.

The protesters are demanding police officials arrest those they say are responsible for Friday’s arson attack on the substation, which left Sibongile without power.
