Protesters march to SAPS after substation sabotage

According to the municipality, repairs to the substation at the entrance to Sibongile will take weeks and cost millions of Rand.

Protesters are currently gathered outside the Dundee Police Station, demanding the arrest of those who sabotaged a substation  – the results of which cut off power to Sibongile on Friday.

Mayor, Siduduzo Mdluli is also at the station, and has asked protesters to choose five people to represent them in a discussion with senior police officers.

The fire at the substation last week, reportedly deliberate, has left the area in darkness since Friday morning.

Municipal officials said repairs to the substation will take weeks and damage is estimated at around R8-million.

The protest group, who marched from Sibongile to the police station, claim to know who was behind the arson.

It is believed the sabotage is linked to a  Youth Parliament decision to choose service providers from outside Endumeni, over local contractors.

This is a developing story and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
