Dundee’s French soirée honours Prince Imperial and boosts tourism

Promotion of the Prince Imperial Tourism Route in KZN has assisted the rural QweQwe community

Dundee’s famous French Evening, or soirée, which includes a week of related activity related to French culture,  is held during the first weekend of June to honour the memory of  the Prince Imperial, Louis Napoleon.

He was the last male heir to the French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte the Third, and was killed in action on June 1 1879 during the Anglo-Zulu War, near the uQweqwe village, where the memorial to his legacy can be found today.

The Prince Imperial Route was pioneered by historian and Pietermaritzburg French linguist, Glenn Flanagan,

Held at the home tour guide, Elisabeth Durham’s Chez Nous B and B, the evening this year included guests,Consule Générale de France, Mme Sonia Dona Perez, and the Guest-of-Honour was the Principal, Project Gateway Christian School, Pietermaritzburg, Mr Clarke.

The uQweqwe community who live next to the Prince Imperial monument, has benefited substantially from this cultural tourism research development project since April 1995. From 2011 this community outreach programme was extended to the eMaphayipini community, next to the Prince’s monument, and to several other communities close to Pietermaritzburg.
