Businessman’s frustration builds as concerns are neglected

Local businessman feels that the Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality can do more to improve the image of the town

An Estcourt businessman called the Estcourt News with a different idea last week.

“How about instead of featuring a beautiful photo in the ‘Zooming in on Estcourt’, we show pictures of how terrible our town looks?” he asked.

Frustration and indifference has driven this businessman, who wanted to remain anonymous, to want to pursue other means of forcing the hand of the local municipality. He explained that it’s been months that several concerns plaguing Phillip and Albert streets were reported to Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality.

Some of the matters include vehicles being repaired on the roadside, which leaves behind a messy trail of oil, grease and motor parts, litter that is being dumped in the Little Bushmans River that passes through Albert Street as well as the lack of bins in Phillip Street.

“The top end of the central business district may look clean but what about the bottom end? The streets are dirty and there is absolutely no one that is concerned. I have called the municipality on numerous occasions and each time their answer is that they will send someone but this never happens,” said the businessman.

“I think that it is time people see what the town looks like, it might jolt the municipality into action,” he added.

The businessman spoke of the recent business inspections undertaken by a government delegation to uncover non-compliant shop owners.

“They are cleaning up the businesses, now what about cleaning up the town? The cleaning staff doesn’t even have brooms,” he exclaimed.

These concerns, which have been echoed by any other residents, remain unanswered.
