One was dead animals dumped there and the health risk posed by this. The second concern was raised by deputy fire protection officer of the Umtshezi Fire Association Warren Blaker about the potential fire risk.
Since these matters have been aired, Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipal Manager Patrick Mkhize has responded with good news.
“The identified animals will be investigated and appropriate health compliance measures will be implemented.”
He announced that the municipality is in the process of ensuring that the following implementation plan is fully rolled out:
• Development of the integrated waste management plan and the draft integrated waste management plan is complete and will soon be advertised for public comments;
• Improve kerbside waste collection and it can be confirmed that this has improved;
• Improve litter picking and general cleansing and the municipality is currently putting more focus on this item to ensure improvement;
• Upgrading of the landfill site to ensure proper daily operations to include spotting, separation at source, sorting, separation on site and daily covering; and
• Implementation of a recycling programme to include separation at source by partnering with the private sector, issuing of refuse bags, transportation and deviation from the landfill site.
This forms part and parcel of the development/implementation of the integrated waste management plan, which includes instilling standard operating procedures at the landfill site.
“Until then, we request patience and co-operation from the public while we roll out the plan,” requested Mr Mkhize.
