Cable theft knocks out phone lines

This is the second time in 6 months that businesses have been hit by cable theft.

Telephonic communication is currently down in large parts of  Dundee  following a cable theft. It is believed the theft took place in the early hours of Monday morning.

Affected areas include many lower-lying areas of Dundee, particularly around Bulwer and south Gladstone Street,  south towards the Avon industrial area.

Erich Müller says his business, Glendee Fert and Lime,  on Cable Road has been ‘terribly affected’.

“We cannot do business without telecommunications. This is the second time in around 6 months the cabling has been stolen. We urge Telkom to resolve the problem, to ensure that normal business can continue,” he said.

In response, Telkom representatives said its technicians (OpenServe) were looking into the matter, and were devising alternate ways to ensure its customers ‘continue to enjoy the benefits of telephonic communication’.

Dundee SAPS has also launched an investigation.
