Weekend replacement for stolen phone cables

Another cable theft in Glencoe at the weekend, has left scores of residents without telephonic communication.

Dundee businesses, that since Monday have been without telecommunications, should be ‘back on line by the weekend’.

Telkom’s broadband division, Openserve said about 100m of copper cabling was cut and stolen on Monday morning, from 3 street distribution cabinets near Gladstone Street.

“The affected cabinets  provide communication access services to the Avon Industrial Area and surrounding homes. Openserve has ordered the material required for the repair, and will commence with the restoration work as soon as the material is delivered this week,” said Openserve spokesperson, Pynee Chetty.

54 Glencoe residents were also without telephone services, after 650m of 200 pair copper cable was cut and stolen near Damman Street over the weekend.

“Providing sustainable communication facilities for the  affected customers is of primary importance, but unfortunately this is no longer achievable by replacing the copper cable. Openserve has referred the matter to the relevant service providers of the affected customers, suggesting customers be switched to alternative technologies. Affected customers are urged to contact their respective service providers to find out what alternatives are available to them.”
