This comes after a man was seriously injured when the vehicle he was driving crashed into a wall of a residential premises last Sunday. The couple, who declined to be named, say they are not surprised because Elizabeth Avenue is a “race track”.

They report that some motorists drive at high speeds on this stretch of road, with many disregarding the four-way stop at Brickhill Road.

“We have been living here since 1988 and during the past six or seven years, we have complained to the traffic department about speeding drivers. It is a big problem because there are children walking past and there could be a big accident. People will get killed,” said the couple.

They suggested to the local municipality that speed calming devices be erected on the road.

“We need a speed hump here. If the municipality can help others, they can help us too,” added the couple.

Responding to these concerns, Inkosi Langalibalele Municipal Manager Patrick Mkhize said there have been no requests from residents for speed humps in this area. Mr Mkhize added that while the four-way stop can’t be manned by traffic officer 24 hours a day, law enforcement is carried out there on occasions.

“Residents should submit a letter to the municipal manager requesting speed calming devices and the matter will be investigated. This procedure takes about a month to complete as signs need to be placed prior to the speed hump being erected, to warn motorists of the upcoming speed hump. When it’s up, it will be painted,” advises Mr Mkhize.
