Yesteryear’s NKZN rugby stars reunited
Guests – all former rugby players and administrators plus their spouses, mingled and rekindled old friendships before the event formally began.

The who’s who of Northern KwaZulu-Natal rugby was out in numbers on Saturday night.
An event at The Pines brought together NKZN players, who represented teams from 1973 to 1995, for a reunion which also celebrated local rugby and its famed origins.
Incorporated into the event was a book launch.
Northern Natal Rugby 1973 – 1995 Rugby in the far corners of the ‘Last Outpost of the British Empire’ From Natal Country Districts to Northern Natal is the latest comprehensive biographic work by Heinrich Schulze and Eddie Grieb.
This book provides a snapshot of so-called Lammergeier rugby.
Guests – all former rugby players and administrators plus their spouses, mingled and rekindled old friendships before the event formally began.
The master of ceremonies was local sporting legend, Andrè Spies.
He welcomed all to the function, then requested guests to stand for a moment of silent remembrance, in honour of those who could not attend or who had passed on.
Next, the ice was broken with a ‘vasvra’ (quiz).
Calling the test ‘hoog graad’ (higher grade), Spies quizzed the room on their knowledge of NKZN rugby, including questions on who coached a specific team between 1973 and 1995.
Spies concluded with a short CV of guest speaker, Heinrich Schulze.
Schulze himself began with an acknowledgement, of the 12 players who were crucial through their skill and spirit, in the formation of NKZN as its own rugby district.
The evening was rounded off with a sit-down supper.
