Inspection targets Utrecht businesses
Emadlangeni Municipality is planning on doing consistent visits to the businesses, to ensure owners are keeping within the regulated rules, and will soon be issuing fines to businesses guilty of breaking the law.
Government departments descended on Utrecht businesses on June 27, during a multi-team inspection.
The team of inspectors included the Emadlangeni (Utrecht) Municipality’s Local Economic Development (LED) Unit, and conducted numerous checks on compliance, business licences, issues relating to Home Affairs, health and safety, as per the law and related legislation.
Emadlangeni Municipality LED Manager, Themba Zondi said the inspections were part of its regular routine checks.
“The inspections that took place formed part of our regular assessments done in the Emadlangeni Municipality. We work with various government departments, in ensuring businesses are following regulations and the necessary by-laws. Amongst others, is the Home Affairs Department, which particularly focuses on checking permits of the business people, because we know that most of them are foreign nationals.”
Zondi elaborated, “We found that with sanitary pads, the packaging is sometimes altered and we see a powdery substance in the packaging that shouldn’t be there, and might be harmful for females and could cause cancer. It’s people who are in the most rural parts who suffer, because these stores are close to them. They depend on them and spend a lot of money to travel, only to find that they are not even sold the right foods and goods. We also checked on restaurants, their conditions and if the working area is right to produce food for customers. We made another discovery, that some businesses sell medications, which we don’t even know when they expire, as well as creams that may cause skin irritation, which are not even allowed to be sold in South Africa.”

Expired goods and food essentials were confiscated and later destroyed.
