PROFILE: Wembezi law student seeks and finds success

As a young man, Thabo Magubane always aspired grow and fulfil his goals

Out of a seemingly hopeless situation, Thabo Magubane says he has blossomed and aspires to be one of the great success stories from Wembezi.

It was a proud moment for the former Drakensberg Secondary School learner, who is now a second-year law student at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, when he was selected to be part of a prestigious moot court competition.
The Foreign Direct Investment Moot was held at the Unisa Florida Campus in Johannesburg from July 3 to 6 and hosted by the Student Litigation Society.

Law students from several universities across South Africa attended and participated in the competition.

“During the competition, I was an acting advocate, orally presenting arguments we prepared with my peers from UKZN. With hard work, the presiding judges announced us as the national winners. This means we will be representing South Africa in the All Africa Rounds and if we proceed, we will represent South Africa in Global Rounds hosted at the University of Miami,” he explained.

Mr Magubane is hopeful that with determination and the hard work he has become accustomed to, he will be flying the KZN flag high in the USA. Sharing his humble background, the 20-year-old says he was raised in a middle-income home in a “very disadvantaged background” in Wembezi C-Section.

“This is a community that is flooded with drugs, a high level of teenage pregnancy and rapid growth of diseases. In the community I come from, it is difficult to find any sense of motivation because it is almost impossible to meet someone at a higher level of life or taking responsibility, especially representing the country,” he elaborated.

Describing Estcourt as “a town facing a vacuum of positivity”, Mr Magubane hopes his story will spark inspiration in people who may find themselves seeking a saviour.

“My story is to prove that, as Estcourt residents, we still have hope and the challenges we are facing will come to pass, especially indicating the capability of the Estcourt youth. We just need support from our leaders, communities, families and our town as a whole,” Mr Magubane concluded. Keep an eye out for future updates on Mr Magubane and his team’s progress.
