The second stop was at the Bhekuzulu Community Hall, where Mayor Mbele; uThukela District Municipality Speaker, Cllr PG Strydom; LTT chairperson Mr VT Nkabinde and Mr B Sithole from the provincial office of the Department of Human Settlements; Waseem Mohamed from the Al-Imdaad Foundation and Izinduna zeNkosi yamaHlubi commemorated the day with the community of Ward 6.

Mr VT Nkabinde gave a background of the day and the purpose thereof. He said Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in prison before being released and was able to selflessly work for 67 years in serving humanity from 1942. He stressed that Dr Mandela can be honoured by doing something that will make a difference in our communities.

The mayor said Mandela Day not only celebrates Mandela’s life, but is also a global call to action for people to recognise their ability to have a positive effect on others around them. Since July is Men’s Month, she encouraged men to talk openly about issues they might have, and to take a stand and fight violence against women and children.
Men’s Sector chairperson Gcino Gwala held a dialogue with the men who were present.

Cllr SE Dumo applauded the community for attending in numbers and also thanked the Al-Imdaad Foundation for donating 30 blankets to the senior citizens of Ward 6. 40 warm hats were also distributed to a crèche.
