Newcastle Municipality has officially introduced the Wind Power project to residents and key stakeholders. This was done during a community engagement session held last week at Bothaspass Primary School in Ward 1.

The engagement was attended by Newcastle Mayor Xolani Dube, Council Speaker Thengi Zulu, the Ward 1 councillor and representatives from Mulilo Energy Holdings.

According to a statement released by the municipality, the project developer outlined the objectives, scope and anticipated outcomes of the project.

The project is expected to contribute towards renewable energy generation, economic growth, skills development, environmental sustainability and local job creation.

Municipality highlights community participation

The mayor reiterated that the municipality remains committed to transparency, accountability and meaningful public participation when it comes to major developments.

“The Newcastle Wind Power Project represents a transformative investment in our municipality and a significant milestone in KwaZulu-Natal’s renewable energy journey. Beyond generating clean, sustainable energy, this project will stimulate economic growth, create employment opportunities, empower local businesses and uplift our communities.”

He continued that, “As the municipality, we remain committed to ensuring that residents are active partners in this development through meaningful consultation, transparency and the establishment of a representative Project Steering Committee. Together, we are building a greener, more prosperous future for Newcastle and generations to come,” said Dube.

Furthermore, a key topic during the engagement was the proposal to establish a Project Steering Committee.

Committee to represent local interests

According to the municipality, the committee would serve as the formal liaison between the project developer, the community and the municipality.

“The Project Steering Committee will play a critical role in facilitating effective communication, addressing community concerns, monitoring project progress, and ensuring that local interests are represented throughout the implementation and construction phases of the project,” the municipality concluded.
