The purpose of the visit was to introduce a contractor for the excavation of pipeline trenches for water reticulation in Ward 6.
When completed, the scheme will serve approximately 1100 households in the area.

The project will also create about 50 temporary job opportunities for locals.
The project is envisaged to take up to 18 months to complete. The water project has been awarded to two private companies: R & D Construction and Sukuma Engineering. It is estimated that over R29 million will be injected into the project on its completion.

This is being undertaken in an attempt to tackle water scarcity in the area, which has been an ongoing problem for quite some time.

“Our aim is to bring hygienic and drinkable water to the community. It is our duty to make sure the community receives basic needs. We also aim to bring potable water to the community and today we are here to introduce the contractors, who are ready to start working soon. Temporary jobs will also be created for the locals,” said the mayor.

He urged the community to work hand-in-hand with the service providers to get the job done in time. Cllr Ndumo and the Bhekuzulu community are grateful that the district has come to their rescue.

They said building water infrastructure is crucial to address water challenges in the area. The community also thanked the mayor for everything he does to develop communities within the district.

The mayor reminded the people that working together as a community is vital to bring service delivery to the people.
By midday, the team headed to Ward 18 in the Etshelengele area to introduce the same contractors, who will be undertaking the construction of a water project. When completed, the scheme will serve approximately 450 households. The project will also create about 20 temporary jobs and is envisaged to take about 12 months to complete.

It is estimated that more than R22 million will be injected into this project.

The community and Ward Councillor Ndwandwe are grateful, as they see the progress uThukela District is making in the area to improve their lives by tackling water shortages.
