Faith in God brings Betty through life’s hardships

Retired teacher, socialite, dressmaker and member of the Endumeni Senior Citizen’s Club, Chand ‘Betty’ Smith (74) is a female warrior. Mrs Smith taught at Dundee Primary School for 25 years and is humbled every time she bumps into her former learners.
“I did not realise I made an impact on the lives of the learners I have taught over the years. I loved teaching, and making an impact on the young lives I have touched over the years makes it all worth it.”
Mrs Smith is well-travelled, and has visited London, Dubai and Singapore to name a few destinations.
“I met my late husband in London back in 1975 and ended up working there. In 1979, we were married.”
Mrs Smith admitted life had not been smooth sailing for her. She has lost four people who were close to her her – including her husband, and her sister to cancer in 2015 – but was able to overcome grief through difficult times.
“Losing a loved one is not easy and no one gets over the death of a loved one. As a woman I had to journey on. I had to be patient knowing God was holding my hand and had to cling to my faith in God.”
Mrs Smith loves giving home visits to those suffering and enjoys looking after those who can’t look after themselves.
“South Africans are beautiful people and they are loud. I enjoy it here in Dundee because in a small town, we all know each other. As an elderly woman, my advice is that having a career is not everything: find a hobby and read more. Live,” she concluded.
