Over R2 million allocated by uThukela to help communities with water and sanitation

The mayor told the audience that the level of unemployment is very high and that the population has increased immensely over the past few years

All roads recently led to Lusitania in Ward 24, where uThukela District Mayor Siphiwe Mazibuko introduced a contractor who will be undertaking a sanitation project. Accompanying the mayor on the visit were Chief Whip Cllr S Dlungwane and Ward Cllr Nxumalo, along with a team of officials. The mayor told the audience that the level of unemployment is very high and that the population has increased immensely over the past few years.

“Sanitation is one of the most important aspects of community well-being because it protects human health, extends life-spans and is documented to provide benefits to the economy,” said the mayor. He encouraged the community to work together with the municipality in order for the project to be successful.

He said he would be disappointed if, for some reason, the contractor was stopped by the community from doing its job, as this could have a negative impact on completion time. Nhloso Development Consultants was then introduced to the community to carry out the sanitation project (VIP toilets). The project will create job opportunities for locals. It is expected to take up to three months to complete. An amount of over R2 million has been allocated for this project and about 208 households are expected to benefit.

“We welcome the project that was introduced by the mayor today and also hope that through it, people will benefit a lot,” said Cllr Nxumalo. The community was grateful that Council is developing their area, as they have had challenges before with service delivery, especially with water and sanitation provision.
