Despite an attempt on his life, which caused severe trauma, proportional representation (PR) councillor Kabelo Nthekiso will continue to serve the community.
On October 2, Mr Nthekiso escaped a barrage of gunshots from the occupants of an unknown vehicle as he was making his way to a council meeting in Wembezi. He and a passenger escaped unhurt but utterly distressed.

This has not deterred the 22-year-old PR councillor from the Al Jama-ah Party, who is forging ahead with a charitable programme he started after being sworn in as a councillor.
He decided to donate 50 per cent of his councillor’s salary to five youth who are from child-headed households.
“After being appointed in August, I took an oath and resolution to serve the people of this region with diligence and utmost pride. I took a resolution as a young person, who grew up in an underprivileged family, to uplift the lives of fellow young people. I have identified the children from Zwelisha, Enowebu, Engcinusizi and Wembezi C-Section, who are going to share 50 percent of my monthly salary as a councillor,” he explained.
Mr Nthekiso adds that this decision was not dictated by politics.
“It is within my conscience to transform the lives of needy people. For me, being a councillor is not only about earning a salary but about seeing the lives of people transformed,” he concluded.
