uThukela releases statement on water issues affecting parts of Ladysmith

Normal water supply throughout the affected areas is anticipated to be restored over the weekend

In certain areas of Ladysmith, residents have been without water for almost six days now.

uThukela District Municipality has released a statement regarding the water issues in town.

In the statement, they say that the Ezakheni Water Treatment Plant is currently not fully operational due to “a series of lightning damage to the raw water abstraction pump electrical panels”, which reduced production at the water treatment plant.

Umgeni Water is currently working on repairing the faulty equipment. Load-shedding is said to have aggravated the situation and interrupted the water build-up to the reservoir.

Water supply interruptions affect the following areas: former Ladysmith area, which includes Rose Park, Aloe Park, Acaciavale, Hillside, Leonardsville, part of Steadville, as well as Ezakheni and the Pieters Ithala Industrial Area.

According to uThukela, water supply to some parts of the former Ladysmith area will be restored by this afternoon (January 9).

Normal water supply throughout the above-mentioned areas is anticipated to be restored over the weekend.

In the interim, the district municipality has dispatched water tankers to the affected areas.

Community members have planned a meeting to address the town’s water issues, which is set to take place at 6.30pm this evening at DB Service Station in Centenary Road.
