A love story 30 years strong
"We grew and built a home together, started our own business and raised our beautiful children."
“Love is a job you can’t retire from. You have to show up everyday and bring your best effort.”
This is part of the recipe for a successful marriage, created by Leo and Nita Ramkissoon. The couple has been happily married for more than 30 years, and describe each new day as an adventure in their storybook.
“I was 10 years old when I met Leo. He was our next door neighbour and my eldest brother’s friend. I had no idea the gentleman next door would play such a significant role in my life. The years passed and I went into my teenage years. I was not very active on the dating scene until I turned 16 years old, and a wedding was arranged between Leo and I,” said Nita.
The couple’s love story began with a wedding in 1990, and their journey has been described as interesting and adventurous.
“My husband and I did everything together, I was never alone in life but I must say we made a mean team. My mother arranged the marriage for both of our families to come together, as in the old days you didn’t marry just one person, you married the whole family,” laughed Nita.
On November 8, 1991, Leo and Nita made the decision to leave Durban where the family was based and start afresh in Newcastle.
“Leo and I had to learn how to do many things on our own. I had to make my own decisions and Leo worked very hard to ensure we kept afloat. We took a big chance, but the most important thing which kept us going was we did it together,” she added.
30 years down the line, the couple is now three children and three grandchildren richer.
“Every decision we made was for our children, as they were our main priority. We wanted to ensure our children grew up in a happy and loving home and Newcastle was the best place for us and our family. From where we were to where we are now, it has been quite a journey. We grew and built a home together, started our own business and raised our beautiful children. We learn something new everyday,” concluded Leo.
The couple provided a few guidelines on how to sustain a happy and flourishing marriage:
1. Always believe in one another, no matter the circumstances.
2. Have an open relationship with your partner and always be truthful.
3. Keep your promises.
4. Appreciate every day, as you get to spend it with the person you love.
5. Be aware of the difference of being in love and the idea of love.
