New library for Bhekuzulu
"My role as a mayor would not be complete if I do not see to it that such developments are done within our society".
The community of New Location, Bhekuzulu benefitted from a new library last week, which coincided with World Read Aloud Day.
This date aims to promote literacy among the global community, especially the youth.
During the handover of the R6-million library, AbaQulusi acting Mayor, Mncedisi Maphisa said the facility was a huge investment into the future of young people.
“The greatest gift one can bestow on children is education. No amount of wealth, without any educational background, will do any good to our children today. It is for this reason we as a municipality invested this amount into the construction of this library, which we believe will produce the leaders of tomorrow.”
He added that as a mayor, it was part of his role to ensure development took place in the AbaQulusi area. “My role as a mayor would not be complete if I do not see to it that such developments are done within our society. I believe this library will attract more young people and encourage them to read and stimulate their minds. This library will take people from the streets and help mould them into better citizens of AbaQulusi.” Cllr Maphisa further stressed the need to keep children away from drugs and other social ills, associated with spending time on the streets and being idle.

“Reading is also one of the best activities to provide the foundational language and literacy skills our children need to succeed. To the young people; this is your facility, use it wisely! I became mayor because I religiously read my books. I am who I am today because I have a reading culture. These libraries have been stocked with books I am sure you will find interesting and educational.” He said as the library was a public facility, young readers needed to ensure they used books wisely and returned them in good condition. “I wish to take this opportunity and call on all corporate sector stakeholders, organisations and other people to come on board and help us build more facilities of this nature within our town. I hope we will all continue working hand in hand, as we strive to make AbaQulusi a better place for a brighter tomorrow.”
