ARK Support Group members speak out about ‘silent killers’

The top five ‘silent killer diseases’ were discussed

“Be careful and be aware…” These were the words that opened the Act of Random Kindness (ARK) Support Group meeting on February 8.

The topic up for discussion was ‘Silent Killers’ and as chairperson Shailen Sunderpersad explained, there are thousands of diseases and illnesses that creep up and ravage one’s health.

Silent killer diseases are described as those that produce minimum or no symptoms and are capable of causing death if not treated. At Saturday’s meeting, the top five silent killers were briefly discussed, including their symptoms and possible treatment.

Cancer, cardiomyopathy, diabetes, high blood pressure and osteoporosis are common silent killers, with group members sharing their thoughts and experiences in this regard.

“We have to do everything in moderation; if we don’t, it will cause troubles. We also need not be ignorant or blame others for our conditions. Technology has come a long way and can change our lives,” said Mr Sunderpersad.

Stress was also named as a silent killer.

“We sometimes worry about others and this causes more stress to ourselves,” said Mike Bessinger.

Members were encouraged to keep tabs on their health and take action if there are any suspicions or symptoms.
The next ARK Support Group meeting will be held on March 28 at the AFM Church in Brickhill Road at 2pm. Everyone is welcome to attend.
