#SiegeofLadysmith2020 – High-level government team to deal with protest in Ladysmith

As part of government intervention, the premier will engage with various stakeholders in Ladysmith

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Mr Sihle Zikalala; MEC for Transport, Community Safety & Liaison Mr Bheki Ntuli; and MEC for Economic Development, Tourism & Environmental Affairs Ms Nomusa Dube-Ncube will be arriving in Ladysmith today (March 10) to intervene in the ongoing protest action and try to resolve the situation.

The protesters are demanding the removal of Mayor Vincent Madlala.

Six trucks were torched along the Colenso / Pieters road during the course of last night.

Since yesterday, no taxis or buses have been operating.

Some roads are currently blocked with huge boulders, rocks, branches and broken steel panels.

Many schools in town are closed today, as school management and staff are worried about the children’s safety.

Messages circulated on social media yesterday morning of alleged water poisoning at the Ezakheni Water Works.

According to uThukela, they have been in constant communication with Umgeni Water. Water samples were taken from the plant to the laboratory for testing and were meant to be available by yesterday afternoon. However, Umgeni Water experienced delays and the results should be in today. “Once the results are known, we will share them with all stakeholders. This will be done without delay,” said uThukela.

As part of the intervention into the protest, the KZN premier will engage with various stakeholders in Ladysmith, including business, the Security Cluster and protesters. “The situation cannot be allowed to continue unabated, hence we are coming closer as government to engage with all affected stakeholders. The current protest is affecting business and the economy of all small towns relying on Ladysmith as an important corridor. Our interest is to ensure that there is stability in the province, and we cannot allow Ladysmith to regress on the work done. Once again, we appeal for calm and to all protesters to engage peacefully,” said Premier Zikalala.
